We have all heard the phrase “happy hour” tossed around when referring to bars and restaurants, right? Happy hour is a specific time of day when a restaurant or bar offers various deals on certain drinks. It’s a great way to try new drinks without breaking the budget in the process.
Although each place may be different, happy hour typically falls somewhere between 4pm and 8pm and, with the right atmosphere, can be a great way to spend your evening. And because it falls perfectly between the times that most people get off work, it’s perfect for those wanting to relax after a stressful workday or who are hoping to meet up with friends.
Happy Hour Through the Ages
The first reference to “happy hour” was actually found in Shakespeare’s work! The term pops up again a couple hundred years later after World War I. During this time, and through the entirety of the roaring twenties, the Navy used the phrase “happy hour” differently than Shakespeare’s period of organized entertainment. While they were stationed on ships, Navy men used boxing and wrestling as a way to relax and have fun.
During this time, prohibition started and lasted all the way until 1933, and the production, transportation, and sale of almost all alcohol were banned. This changed the meaning of happy hour quite a bit, making it a phrase used to reference meeting up and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol in secret. This phrase has carried itself all the way into this day and age, which leaves most of us thankful to all those who contributed in making it stick.
